Letter Dr Linda Berry LACKORE 19 May 2001:
"...Mother was so delighted to hear from you, she phoned me right away. Mother's pleasure stems from the fact that she is caretaker of all the memorabilia of Col. Levi Barber and since. She has sent many documents to me for safekeeping.
"Last summer, I organized the material Mother had sent, and continued the genealogy search on the Internet. I used Family Tree Maker and ended with 1200 people in October when I set aside the project. I then printed various reports, put them in notebooks and sent one to Mother, and one to each of my brother, sister, and daughter for Christmas...
"Thank you for writing Mother. She is probably the most active & beloved 87 year old in Marietta. You added a new dimension which she welcomes!..."

Seven Generations Have Lived in Historic Marietta Home
Just 169 years ago today, Levi Barber and Betsy Rouse both of "the County of Washington Territory Northwest of the River Ohio" were united in marriage by Daniel Story, Clerk, also an ordained minister.
The original of that wedding certificate signed by Clerk Story, is just one of many cherished documents and heirlooms being carefully preserved in the beautiful home built 26 years later by that same Levi Barber along the Ohio River in West Marietta. The house, completed in 1829, has been occupied by seven generations of the family, the current residents being Lucy Cole Flemming, great-granddaughter of Levi, and her daughter Florence Engle.
The first Levi enjoyed the handsome brick home only four years before he died in 1833. But his son, Levi, lived on in the family home even after his marriage, and then his daughter, Lucy Barber, who married James F Cole, continued, to live in the family home after her marriage, which ended in three short years when James' untimely death left her a widow with two infants, Seldon and little Lucy- who grew up and married Edwin A Flemming.
Mrs Flemming left after her marriage, but returned when her husband retired about 1940. Now having celebrated her 90th birthday, she lives on in the landmark house with her daughter, Florence. The latter's children and grandchildren have also stayed in the home at 407 Fort St, where the original glass brought from England still gleams in the fanlights above the front door and upstairs hall window.
Mrs Flemming remembers hearing her grandfather, the second Levi, tell of hauling bricks from the kiln for construction of the big house, and the family stories of how Henry Clay visited there.
Slthough there are no written records of the visit in the family's possession, it is not unlikely, for the first Levi, who was commissioned a colonel in the War of 1812, served two terms in the Hous of Representatives in "Washington City". A thick packet of his letters, in the fine penmanship of that day, is part of the family's treasured possessions.
Still entirely readable, they recreate a bit of that period of time (1818-1823). Among admonitions to his children troward suitable behavior and comments on the weather and activity in the House is one remark indicating the writer was at his task while Mr Clay is speaking.
One letter in particular details travel by stage from Washington to Alexandria VA then to Winchester where the colonel waited for the mare he was to ride on home. He commented on her worthiness despite her "sore back" as they traveled on to Romney. Another letter, addressed to his daughter Elizabeth expressed compassion for her suffering with a toothache. Each missive is neatly folded to become its own envelope, in the fashion of the day, marked "free" as to postage because of his political post, and addressed to Point Harmar Ohio.
According to its current residents, the house designed by Col Joseph Barker, stands on land that was purchased by the first Levi Barber in 1805, a part of a ministerial grant. About 10 years ago, Mrs Flemming bought the land outright. Family stories indicate a small dwelling, "just a hut", first stood on the land, located womewhere between the present fine structure and the house at its left.
Just proud of her heritage, Mrs Flemming carefully preserves a handwritten record from many years ago of some family history and genealogy as dictated by her Grandfather Levi to his daughter. His ancestors had left Windsor England in 1630, and his father, the first Levi was born in 1777 in Simsbury Connecticut later to be named Canton, a son of David Barber. David who was injured in the Battle of Lexington during the Revolutionary War, moved his family to Vermont sometime during Levi's youth, and in 1799, when he was 22, Levi came "west" to be employed as a surveyor, hoding a commission with Return Jonathan Meigs. He was also a clerk of courts and served the two terms in Congress.
When he married Betsy Rouse 15 Feb 1803, he took for a wife a direct descendant of the Mayflower pioneers. For Betsy's ancestry, through her father, went directly back to the families of both Miles Standish and of John and Priscilla Alden, since the child of Standish married a child of the Adens, and to this union the Rouses traced their beginning.
Papers of historic interest fill several containers at the Flemming household now- among them the originals of land deeds for purchases made by the first Levi, dating from 1819 through 1825. Three bear the signature (not authenticated) of President James Monroe and Josiah Meigs, commissioner of the General Land Office, these for land in Monroe County; two bear the name of President John Quincy Adams (each in different handwriting), and George Graham, commissioner of the General Land Office, one for land near Woodsfield and the other in Athens County (all as researched in the Washington County Tax Map Dept, and another, over the name of President Andrew Jackson, signed by Elijah Hayward, commission of the General Land Office, for a quarter section of land near Hannibal in Monroe County. This last one was made out to Levi Barber and Seth Fisher.
There are other letteres and documents, perhaps more precious to the family- letters from the second Levi, dated 1862 and written from Summerfield, in which he speaks of the army moving on to White Sulpher Springs: "A fine, health, and they say, beautiful place," and of the "dirty, filthy place we are now in." The letter also speaks of getting supplies at Gauley Bridge. Other documents are copies of his superior officers' recommendations for his promotion to captain. Levi did receive his promotion and in time returned to his family to resume activity in civic and business life until his death Oct 16, 1887.
