NEWSPAPER Marietta "Weekly Leader" 11 May 1881 "The sad announcement of the sudden and unexpected death of James F Cole in St Louis on Wednesday evening was received here on Thursday morning, and cast a deep gloom over the entire community with whom he was a great favorite. In response to a telegram his wife left for St Louis, early in the week and reached that city before his death. He was engaged, at the time the fatal disease cerebrospinal meningitis overtook him, in forwarding the Government Work, which his father Commodore Cole has been prosecuting for the past year. Soon after his sickness began, he was taken to St Louis by his brothers, where everything that loving hearts, and medical skill could suggest was done for him, but Providence had decreed that he must die, and Wednesday evening he passed away. His remains reached here on Friday evening, and were conveyed to the residence of his father-in-law, Capt Levi Barber, from which place the funeral services were held on Saturday morning, the attendance being the largest known in Harmar, for several years. Dr Hawks of whose church he was a member preached the funeral discourse. The pall bearers eight in number were members of the class in college to which he formerly belonged. His remains were laid to rest in the new cemetery, amid the tears and sobs of those who had known and loved him so well in life. He was a kind loving husband and father, a dutiful and affectionate son, and a constant and faithful friend, whose genial smile and pleasant greeting will be remembered in the days and years to come. His sorrowing widow, and his father, brothers and sister, have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community in their sad bereavement.
