CIVIL WAR LETTERS
Harmar 19 Dec 1861
My Dear Son,
I received your very kind letter this afternoon. Was glad to hear that you are in good health. Lucy is just recovering from...The little girl was pretty sick for two days. She had high fever and a hard cough they came out finally at last. You better believe I nursed her good. The dear little thing would look up at me and say 'Don't let brother Henry and Pa know I am sick.' When I ask why, she would reply 'It would make them feel so bad.' Today is the first time she has had her clothes on for three days. She is so bright and cheerful. Has played with dolly and made some pictures tonight. Sleeping finely. Has no fever. You must not be alarmed about her. I think she is out of all danger.
Saturday night the 21. Lucy is still improving. Has not been out doors yet but all around in the house. There is one thing I must tell you about your dear little sister. That is she never closes her eyes without praying for every member of the family especially Pa and brother Henry. There were three days she could not set up without me taking her up to...and when night would come she would say, 'Ma I want to pray for dear Pa and Henry. One night she was so sick her throat was so sore she could not speak loud but in a whisper she asked God's blessing for dear pa and Henry. I could tell you many things Lucy says about you but do not know that it would be interesting...
Your Affectionate Mother
A. M. Barber
Dear Henry write often. Receive a kiss for Lucy, Levy and also from your Mother. My love to Pa.

Letter from Lucy to her father (Levi Jr) written when she was quite young [While he and Henry were off to War?]:
"My Very Dear Pa,
I have been to Sabbath school today and only fell down once it is so slippery. Me, Sallie, and I were at Mattie's to tea last evening. I kissed Mattie Crawford for you and she sends one in return. Harry is a dear sweet baby. When are you going to move. I wish you and Henry [14 year older brother] would move down here. You would get more than one hug and kiss. Spry and Jim are good boys and kill many rats. Anna is well and sends love to Grandpa. My hand is so tired. Write me another good letter. The one you sent is most to pieces.
Love and kiss to Henry
Your dear little girl
Lucy M Barber."

Sister Lucy
I read this morning your not addressed to me in Marietta after it had traveled around after me for a month or more. I must tell you now that I am utterly unable to help you. You certainly don't understand my situation. I bought this boat with borrowed money and have had the bad luck to sink which cost more money than I had to raise her. I will be obliged to pay $10 on an old tax claim against the land in Solcanda or else you will lose it and you will remember I paid $45 last spring which I would not have done for any one else under the circumstances. Whenever I am able to help you I will do so. It is not worth while for you to annoy me for I can positively do nothing for you or for anyone else until I make the money.
Yours
C Martius Cole
