After victorious campaigns against the barbarian Polabs in 1030, he attacked the German King Conrad II, who, in alliance with the RussianGrand Prince Yaroslav of Kiev, attacked Poland (1031), further supported by rebellions within the country. Eventually, about 1033, Mieszko was forced to recognize German supremacy. His death in 1034 thus came at the height of a crisis.
