"JOSEPH SEAMANDS...Another son [of Elijah Grant Seamands and Lucy Sandridge], William Riley Seamands (5 Mar 1809 - 23 Dec 1889) was born in Albemarle County and married Nancy Harshbarger (1 Jan 1810 - 28 May 1898) on 2 Mar 1829...They made their home near Barboursville. Prior to the civil War, William was an officer in the militia, and as a US Marshall hunted down fugitive slaves. During the war William was a prisoner at Coumbus, Ohio, and Nancy a prisoner in Wayne County because of their Southern sympathies. Eventually William owned a large amount of real estate in Cabell, Lincoln, Wayne, Putnam, and Kanawha counties. They are buried at Mud River Baptist Church Cemetery..."

"SEAMONDS: Elijah Seamonds had a number of children; among them being William R, and Elijah G, Jr, who lived near Davis' Creek. William R was born in Cabell County in 1812, and died in 1889. He was a United States Deputy Marshal, and had arduous service. He married Nancy Harshbarger, daughter of David Harshbarger, and was long employed by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, and was the father of "Gal," John, Charles, and Jim, railroad men who moved to Texas in the '80s; Charles, killed in the service CSA; Alf; Mary, married Ben Shy, Lucy, married a Coffman; elizabeth, married a McCain, p Susan, married George Crump; Nannie, married VB Davis; and William H..."

His father was one of the most prominent of the early settlers here, and was a minister and one of the first school teachers. In what is now Union District, Cabell County, 5 Mar 1829, William r Seamands wedded Nancy Harshbarger, who was born in Botetourt County, VA, on New Years Day, 1810...The children of Mr and Mrs Seamands are recorded: Andrew J, David A, Mary, Cahrley R, Elizabeth, Lucy, William H, Eliza, Peyton H, Susan, and Nannie...William R Seamands held a commission in the State militia, 1836-1861. By special legislation, he was appointed marshal in 1858 or 1859, and continued until his commission was destroyed by a freshet in the river. He owns a large quantity of real estate in Cabell, Lincoln, Wayne, Putnam, and Kanawha Counties, and his post office address is Barboursville, Cabell County, West Virginia."
