NOTES "The Great Name Change of 1896: Strudells" James David Strudell- Apr 1997 "...Sometime not long after the Cyclone, the family name was changed from Strudel to Strudell. Whoever was involved even went back to the then century-old papers from Alsace, and added an extra 'L' to the name. We can only speculate as to the reason for the change. My belief is that it was done due to pronunciation problems. Back in 1810, Jean David Strudel had been frustatrated with the French bureaucracy mispelling "Strudelle". Did the family oldtimers pronounce the Strudel name with the accent on the first syllable [as is customary in German] or second syllable [as we now do]? Perhaps the post-Cyclone name change was to emphasize a change in pronunciation, or instead perhaps to clarify what had always been the correct pronunciation? Who knows..."
