BOOKS
Encycopaedia Britannica, Micropaedia, Vol IV, Encyclopaedia Britannica Inc, 1981, Chicago, Grant Ulysses, p680:
"Original name Hiram Ulysses Grant (b. 27 Apr 1822 Point Pleasant OH, d. 23 Jul 1885, Mount McGregor NY), commander of the Federal Army during the late years of the U.S. Civil War and 18th president of the United States (1869-1877).
"Abstact of text biography: A graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Grant began a military career, but resigned in 1854. Returning to duty in 1861 after the outbreak of the Civil War, he gained a number of victories in the West and in March 1864 was given command of all Union forces; his plan brought victory in 1865. During Grant's two terms as president, scandals obscured the positive aspects of his presidency. Grant supported amnesty for Confederate leaders and the civil rights of Negroes."

18th US President. Served two terms. Grant served as a general in the Civil War. In spite of his admirable service record and number of victories in war, Grant was accused of being a mediocre statesman and his administration was marred by scandal.
