"Family Record.
"To Hudson's History of Marlboro Mass., I owe the possession of the following data of the earliest records of the Bigelow race.
"This family was early in the Country, and may be traced to a remote period in England, even to the reign of Henry the 3d, (1206) when the name was written Baguley, and was derived from the place where they dwelt. Richard, at that time, was Lord ofBaguley, and his descendants took the name of the place. In the reign of Henry the 7th, (1485) Ralph de Baguley was Lord of Allerton Hall. He died in 1540, leaving Randall and Nicholas. Randall died in 1556, and his sons Phillip and Robert divided his estate. Robert died in 1582, leaving a son Randall, who moved to Suffolk County, England, and died in 1626, leaving two sons, Francis and John. Francis died in 1657, and gave by will a portion of his property to his brother John, thenin New England, at Watertown, Mass.
"From the 'Genealogical Records of New England' I quote as follows:
"'John Bigelow, Watertown, MA, 1636, Blacksmith, son of Randall, of Wrentham in County of Suffolk England, baptized 16 Feb 1617 bythe hand of Rev John Philip, the Rector, who came to our country two years after Bigelow did and lived some time at Dedham, but on the overthrow of the Bishops' domination in England went back to his old living.'
"The above named (1) JohnBigelow married, 30 Oct 1642, Mary Warren, daughter of John Warren of Watertown MA, which was the earliest marriage on the town records.

"James Bigelow, m. Mar 25, 1687, Patience Browne, dau. of Jonathan and
Mary (Shattuck) Brown, who was b. Mar. 6, 1668-1669. He d. Jan 30,
1728. Their son,
"James Bigelow, bp. May 6, 1688; m. Mercy ------. He d. Aug. 8, 1718. They lived in Weston, Mass..."

p29: "1.(I.) John Bigelow, a blacksmith, of Watertown, took the oath of fidelity, 1652, and was selectman 1665, '70, '71, He m 30 Oct 1642 Mary Warren [This is the earliest marriage found in the town records.] She d 19 Oct 1691 and he m (2d) 2 Oct 1694 Sarah Bemis. He d 14 Jul 1703 aged 86. Inventory L627,12. His will was dated 4 Jan 1702-1703 and proved 28 Jul 1703.
"2.1. John b 27Oct 1643; a housewright; settled in Hartford CT prior to 1669, in which year his land was taxed. He m Rebecca, dau of Jonathan Butler, of Hartford. His will, dated 1707, after providing for his wid (he had no chil) conveyed his estate to Jonathan Butler, and the farm has remained with the Butler family to this day. Some of Mr Bigelow's relatives attempted ineffectually to break this will.

He was fined 3 Nov 1685 'For insulting Lt Gov Stoughton and Dudley.' He d 20 Jan 1727/1728. She m (2d) 8 Jan 1728/1729 Adam Smith of Boston. 45.1. James bap 6 May ?1668 <1688; by wife Mercy had a dau Patience b 8 Jun 1717, and he d at Casco Bay 9 Aug 1718.

p119 "(Abraham Browne's) wid. Lydia m 27 Nov 1659 Andrew Hodges of Ipswich [proprietor of Ipswich in 1639, where his wife Ann d 15 Nov 1658]. He died Dec 1665 and his wid returned to Watertown where she d 27 Sep 1686. By wife Lydia he (AB) had 6 chil. of whom at least one, and probably two were b in England. the earliest record of a birth in Watertown was that of his dau Lydia.

3.2. Mary probably b in England, m 10 Apr 1650 John Lewis of Charlestown afterwards of Malden. [His first wife Margaret, by whom he had 6 chil., d 10 Apr 1649.] He d 16 Sep 1657. In 1667 she was wife or wid of ____ Cutler... 4.3. Lydia b in Watertown 22 Mar 1632/1633, m Lieut William Lakin Jr of Groton...

6.6. Abraham b 6 Mar 1639/1640, d 1667, Inventory dated 28 Sep 1667. He purchased land in Groton, where he proposed to settle near his sister Lydia. But, Mary Dix, to whom he was engaged to be married, was unwilling to go to Groton, and she 'desired Thomas Parks to go to Ipswich to treat with Mrs Hodges to see what she would do for her son Abraham Browne upon his marriage.' He went, and 'Mrs Hodges gave him (her son A) full power to settle upon her land in Watertown,' etc. He m 5 Feb 1662/1663 Mary Dix..."
"5.7 (II.) Jonathan Browne m 11 Feb 1661/1662 Mary Shattuck [Shattuck, 3.] She d 23 Oct 1732 aged 87 and was buried in the Waltham graveyard. His Will was dated 19 Feb 1690-1691 and proved Apr 7 and Inventory dated 1 Apr 1691. Wife and son Abraham Exec'rs. Real estate 6 lots of land amounting to 211 acres appraisedat L247. [Prob Records Vol VII 134-137.]

[It was formerly supposed, by the writer, that this was the Ebenezer Brown who d in Newton Mar 1740, but that is improbable if not certainly disproved.] 32.16.9. Benjamin b 27 Feb 1681/1682, d 11 Mar 1753. 42.17.10 William b 3 Sep 1684, d 28 Oct 1756."
