BOOKS
Genealogy of the Mills Family, DeVinne Press, Susan Lawrence Mills, 1906, Norfolk CT, p5:
"Genealogy of the Mills Family. I. Simeon Mills came from England, and is the first of the name of Mills of whom we have any record, his brother John having died on the voyage.
"Simeon married Mary Buell the twenty-third of February AD 1649, twenty- nine years after the first landing of the Pilgrims at Plymouth. He settled and resided in Windsor until 1669, when he removed to Simsbury CT (then called Massacoe), seven years before the burning of Simsbury by the Indians under King Philip.
"Simeon and Mary Mills had eleven children- five sons and six daughters: Mary b 8 Dec 1652; Hannah b 1655; Simeon b May 1657; John b June 1658; Sarah b Sep 1660; Abigail b 1662; Elizabeth b 1664; Prudence b 1666; Simeon 2nd b 1668; two younger sons supposed to havedied in infancy or early youth...
"The wife of Simeon Mills was a woman of great courage and energy, as the following story, which has been told of her from one generation to another, will show.
"The Indians at that time were so hostile and treacherous that those first settlers deemed it unsafe for their families to remain in their houses at night, and built a forress of logs, where they slept with their guns loaded, ready for a sudden attack. Their house was half a mile from the fort, and one day, when the time arrived for them to go there, some delay occurred. The bread that Mrs. Mills was baking was not ready to be taken from the oven, and, the darkness coming on, she requested her husband to hasten to the fort with the children, and to leave his loaded gun with her, while she remained to watch the bread. At length she was ready to leave, when she saw three Indians, one sitting on the fencem, and one climbing over the bars of the fence near the house, and another coming. With great presence of mind, she closed the door, and began to call over the names of her boys, in a loud voice telling them to get their guns, for the Indians were coming, and at each name she threw up a chair, which came tumbling downstairs with a great noise. The she fired off her gun through a hole in the door. Whe heard a groan, and a sound as thought they were dragging one of their number away, and when the last sound of the retreating Indians had died inthe distance, she ran for the fort, and was met on the way by her husband and some men who had heard the report of the gun.
"On the following morning, on returning from the fort, there were traces of blood to be seen from the house to thewoods, and they thought one Indian had been killed.
"Capt. Michael Mills used to relate the foregoing story of his brave great grandmother to his grandchildren..."

History of the Simon Mills Family, Katie R Mills, Vol I, p1:
"1. Simon Mills, early settler at Windsor CT is believed to have come to America from England, but the date is not known, nor do we know from what part of England he came.
"The earliest date found for him is that of his marriage at Windsor to Jone _____ on 18 Oct 1639. Savage gives this date and suggests that it might have been his second marriage. Many published records of Simon Mills say it was his second marriage, but inasmuch as none of the dates nor locations to prove these stories can be found in public records, the stories must be assigned to the realm of tradition; and there they must remain unless and until proof can be found.
"Tradition is that he came from Yorkshire, England, to New England with a Captain Newbury; that his first wife, Sarah Bissell, came on the same ship; that she was a daughter of John Bissell, early settler at Windsor CT; that they were at Plymouth, MA, as early as 1628 (although sometimes the location is given as Salem, MA); that Sarah (Bissell) MIlls was the mother of Simon Mills, Jr, born about 1635, and that she died before 1638, thus leaving her husband with a small son and, therefore, the necessity of having a wife to take care of him. Also there is the story that Simon was accompanied on his trip to America by his brother John Mills, who died on the voyage.
"Records at Plymouth or Salem, MA, have not been found to prove that Simon Mills, or the Bissell family, had lived there as early as 1628; nor at any time after that date...
p2: "...Two members of the family in the 6th generation have preserved data for us: (1) Miss Susan Lawrence Mills6 (Eden Mills5, Capt Michael Mills4, Deacon Joseph Mills3, John Mills2, Simon Mills1 Sr), and...(2) Deacon Lewis Mills6 Norton (Charity Mills5 Norton, Joseph Mills4 Jr, Deacon Joseph Mills3, John Mills2, Simon Mills1 Sr)...who wrote extensively of our line of Millspeople, many of whom he knew personally, although some of the data in his Manuscript was obtained by correspondence, or through others who were interested in his writing of family records...
"In Mar 1819 Deacon Norton called on the oldest member of the Mills family: Col Amasa Mills, then 83 years old, and blind, living...at Canton CT, to ask him about our Mills ancestors. Col Amasa Mills4 (Deacon Joseph Mills3, John Mills2, Simon Mills1 Sr) was son of Deacon Joseph Mills of Simsbury. He was ill at the time as Deacon Norton mentions sitting beside his bed to take notes about the family.
"The story Col Amasa Mills told is that the first Mills of our line came to America with Capt Newbury- he called him 'John'; that Sarah Bissell was a passenger on the same ship; that they married in America; that this John Mills had come from Windsor, England; that he was a baker; that he had two sons, John and Simon, and that there also were some daughters but there is no particular knowledge concerning them; that the son Simon never married and never had any children; that his great-grandfather John Mills had lived and died in Windsor CT.
"It is evident that Col Amasa Mills was confused as to the name of his great-grandfather, and this is understandable in view of his age,his illness, and, being blind, he had no notes from which to refresh his memory. Our Simon Mills did have sons John and Simon, and also daughters, as will be seen later. Proof that Col Amasa was confused on this point is found in the settlementof the estate of Simon Mills of Simsbury, where the records show that in the first settlement in 1691, son John received a share; and in the final settlement in 1714, the share of son John was signed for by his three sons (John Jr, Joseph, andBenjamin) and his son-in-law Samuel Tuller.
"The records clearly show that Col Amasa Mills, son of Deacon Joseph Mills, was grandson of John Mills, and great-grandson of Simon Mills.
"I did not find in the records of Windsor an earlysettler named John Mills, other than the child born there to Simeon and Mary (Buell) Mills.
"Col. Amasa said that son Simon never married, but there is a marriage recorded at Windsor for a Simon Mills to Mary Gaylor, in 1717- and no other available Simon. There are no children listed for them.
"As mentioned, the earliest date I have found for Simon Mills in America is that of his marriage on 18 Oct 1639. The next year he acquired a home lot at Windsor, thus becoming a resident there in 1640. Later he sold this lot and acquired another on the east side of Broad Street, where he lived the rest of his time at Windsor.
"His wife Jone died and was buried 5 Jul 1659. In 1658 she had consulted Dr John Winthrop, whose Journal tells us that she was then about 69 years old and that she 'died childless.'
"Also in the year 1659 on 23 Feb the records of Windsor list the marriage of Simeon Mills and Mary Buell.
"It is probable that these two items inthe year 1659 gave rise to the supposed need of two men named Simon Mills in Windsor at that time, it being obvious that Simon Mills could not marry in February when his wife lived until July!
"Apparently those who worked on early Mills records failed to remember that in those days the New Year began in the middle of the month of March- not on January 1st as it does today. This arrangement puts the month of February at the end of the year instead of near the beginning. So the marriage to Mary Buell in February occurred more than seven months after the death of wife in July- both dates being at that time in the year 1659. Nowadays when one uses a date such as this, it is written Feb 1659/1660 to remind the reader of the difference in the calendar today and that of the 1600's. Then it was their year 1659, but now it is our year 1660.
"Mary Buell was a young girl then, in her 17th year, having been born at Windsor, 2 Sep 1642, eldest daughter of Williamand Mary (_____) Buell. William Buell was of Welsh origin, having come to America in 1630 with his mother, who was called in the records 'Goode Buell.' They had lived first at Dorchester, and then moved to Windsor, where the mother died 3 Dec 1639; and where land was granted to William Buell 1 Dec 1640. Windsor records have his marriage 18 Nov 1640, but the name of the bride is not entered in the record. Her given name was Mary. They became parents of seven children, of whom five grew up and married. William Buell died at Windsor 16 Nov 1681; his widow Mary Buell died there 1 Sep 1684..."
"Simeon and Mary (Buell) Mills became the parents of eleven children, although only six of them reached maturity. They continued tolive in Windsor until about 1670, as daughter Sarah, born that year, is recorded at Windsor; and Simon's name appears on the list of freemen at Windsor dated 11 Oct 1669, but when he sold some land at Windsor in Apr 1672 he is described as 'now dwelling at Simsbury.'
"Deacon Norton tells us that about 1674 or 1675, because of the hostility of the Indians, about forty families of Simsbury returned to Windsor. They buried such of their effects as they could not take with them, and when they returned in the Spring of 1676 they found everything destroyed.
"Our Mills family must have been one of these as the Church record notes a contribution from Simon Mills in 1676 to the Connecticut Fund for the Relief of the Poorin Other Colonies. Being a refugee himself, he was in position to have first-hand knowledge of the groubles of other refugees. No doubt, he felt that he was very fortunate- much more so than others- inasmuch as his wife's parents still lived at Windsor at that time. It is probable that the Simon Mills family lived with the William Buell family during their stay at Windsor.
"This was the time of King Philip's War. During that conflict, on Sunday night, 26 Mar 1676, the Indians burned the town of Simsbury; and that is why there are no early records of Simsbury now available to us.
"Our Mills family returned to Simsbury- though exactly when we do not know. They had to rebuild their home. Their youngest child Simonwas born at Simsbury in 1678; and they took him to Windsor in May 1679 for his baptism.
"Simon Mills, Sr died at Simsbury 8 Jun 1683. The inventory of his estate was taken 6 Jul 1683, and between these two dates the youngest daughter Prudence also died. The inventory lists the value of the estate at L168-7-0. To it was attached a list of the children with their ages at that time.
"No doubt it was because some of the children were young that distribution of the estate was not made until 24 Jul 1691, at which time five of them received portions. These five were son John, and daughters Mary, Hannah, Sarah, and Elizabeth. Possibly this distribution was made at the time Widow Mary (Buell) Mills married her second husband.
"Final destribution was made 5 Apr 1714, to the following: Samuel Humphrey Sr (husband of Mary); Daniel and Hannah Loomis- she signed by her mark; John, Joseph and Benjamin Mills and Samuel Tuller (heirs of son John); Thomas Ellsworth(husband of Sarah); Thomas Hoskins (husband of Elizabeth); and Simon Mills- Executor- he too signed by his mark.
"One wonders why the final settlement was so long delayed inasmuch as the youngest child, son Simon, born 1678, would have reached age 21 in 1699.
"Widow Mary (Buell) MIlls married as her second husband- and she was his second wife- Samuel Bissell, son of John Bissell of Windsor. The date of their marriage has not been found, but it is proved by the fact that she as Widow Mary Bissell bequeathed her property to her Mills children.
"The first wife of Samuel Bissell was Abigail Holcomb, daughter of Thomas Holcomb, married 11 Jun 1658. They had ten children. Abigail died 17 Aug 1688. His second marriage took place between this date and 2 Aug 1697. the date of his will making provision for wife Mary- possibly in Jul 1691, as previously suggested.
"They lived at Windsor, where Samuel Bissell died 3 Dec 1700. His age is not noted but heprobably was just a few years older than Mary inasmuch as he was but a small lad when his father brought his family to Windsor in 1639; andMary was born in 1642.
"Widow Mary Bissell went back to Simsbury to live with her children, and there she died 24 Jun 1718. She made her will 9 Mar 1718, and it was presented to the Hartford Probate Court on 5 Aug following. She made bequests to daughters Mary, Hannah and Elizabeth; the the heirs of son John; to heirs of daughter Sarah Ellsworth; and to son Simon, who was named executor. The value of the estate was L 17-13-09.
"Those who signed for shares were Samuel Humphrey Sr, Simon, John, Joseph and Benjamin Mills and Suel Tuller- all of Simsbury; and Hannah and Daniel Loomis, Thomas Ellsworth and Thomas Hoskins- all of Windsor.

Descendants of William Buell
3. Mary2 Buell (William1)(1735) was born in Windsor, CT September 3, 1642. Mary died June 24, 1718 Simsbury, Hartford, CT, at 75 years of age.
She married twice. She married Simon Mills in Windsor, CT, February 23, 1659/60. Simon was the son of Simon Mills. McCracken Simon, a baker, may have been the Symon who was baptized 25 April 1613 in the parish church of Barnstaple, Devon, as fouirth child of John Mill by hi swife Wilmott Frenshe, who wre married there 28 Aug. 1606, as shown by Miss Eunice M. Lamb. the date of the marriage of Simon Mills to Mry Buell is recorded at Windsor as 23 Feb. 1659/60, which is probably correct, as the births begin about a year afterwards, but for some reason not explained, Mattehw Grant enters the date as 23 Feb. 1656 (i.e. 1656/7). simon Mills had married his first wife Joan, maden name not discovered, on 11 Oct. 1639 and she died at Windsor on 5 July 1659, without having given birth to any child, so that Simon was free to marry a second wife on the date given above.
Simon mills died intestate, but his estate was not finally settled until 1719 after the death of his widow (Manwaring 1:335 f.)
She married Samuel Bissell. Samuel was born 1636. Samuel(1736) was the son of Capt. John Bissell and Mary Drake. Samuel died May 17, 1697 in Windsor, CT, at 60 years of age. McCracken cites Winthrop's medical journal showing Mary aged 18 in 1659 and 27 in 1668.
