Encyclopaedia Britannica 1981 Micropaedia Vol VII p518 Olga Saint: "Born Abt 890, Died 969 Kiev Ukranian SSR, princess who was canonized as the first Russian saint of the Orthodox Church. She was the widow of Prince Igor I, who was assassinated (945) byhis subjects while attempting to extort excessive tribute for his expeditions against Byzantium. Because Igor's son Svyztoslav was still a minor, Olga became regent of the grand principality of Kiev from 945 to 964. She soon had Igor's murderers scalded to death and hundreds of their followers killed. Olga became the first of the royal Kievans to adopt Orthodox Christianity. She was probably baptized (Abt 957), at Constantinople, then the most powerful patriarchate. Her efforts to bring Christianity to Russia were carried out by her grandson, the Grand Prince St Vladimir (died 1015); together they mark the transition between pagan and Christian Russia. Olga's feast day is July 11."

Macropaedia, Vol III, p561, Byzantine Empire: "...In 957 Igor's widow Olga was baptized and paid a state visit to Constantinople during the reign of Constantine VII; her influence enabled Byzantine missionaries to work with greater security in Russia, thus spreading Christianity andByzantine culture..."
