BOOKS
Barber Grandparents: 125 Kings, 143 Generations, Ted Butler Bernard and Gertrude Barber Bernard, 1978, McKinney TX, p81: "328DWilliam IV, Duke of Aquitaine of Auvergne, and of Poitiers, (S of 315, F of 344); abdicated in 990."

Encyclopaedia Britannica, 1981, Micropaedia, Vol I, p466, Aquitaine: "...Established as a kingdom by Charlemagne, it bacame a duchy under thecounts of Poitiers in the 10th and 11th centuries. The last Duke of Aquitaine was William X, whose daughter Eleanor of Aquitaine successively married Louis VII of France and Henry II of England..."

The New Columbia Encyclopedia, 1975, p129, Aquitaine: "...In 781, Charlemagne, who subdued the native nobles, made Aquitaine into a kingdom for his son Louis (later Emperor of the West). After the death (838) of Louis' son Pepin I, Louis added Aquitaine to the West Frankish kingdom of Neustria (France) and granted it to his youngest son Charles the Bald (II, Emperor of the West). A group of Aquitanian nobles made Pepin's young son, Pepin II, King, and a struggle for control ensued between Charles and the Aquitanian (840-852; 862-865). Charles was the eventual victor. During this period Aquitaine was subject to attacks by both Normans and Muslims. The repeated invasions, combined with the civil wars, weakened Carolingian control over Aquitaine, despite Charles the Bald's victory over Pepin II. Charles' successors were forced to recognize the hereditary rights of a number of independent noble families, and during the 10th century royal influence virtually disappeared. After 973 the counts of Poitou bore the title of Duke of Aquitaine; their control beyond Poitou, however was not real- ized for many years..."
