BOOKS
Barber Grandparents: 125 Kings, 143 Generations, Ted Butler Bernard and Gertrude Barber Bernard, 1978, McKinney TX, p83: "345G Hugh Capet, King of France, (S of 347, F of 359); before becoming king, Hugh was Duke of the Franks from 956 to 987 when he became king; was called Capet because he was also Abbot of St Martin de Tours, the name being derived from `Capetus', a Monk's hood, which he wore; married Adelaide."

Kings and Queens of Europe, Genealogical Chart, Anne Taute and Romilly Squire, Taute, 1989: "Hughes Capet, Mar Adelaide of Aquitaine, Died996."

France A Modern History, Albert Guerard, 1959, Univ Michigan Press, p53:
"...Finally, in 987, the direct line of Charles the Great came to an end with Louis V; and Hugh Capet, a descendant of Robert the Strong, was chosen king. No one was conscious of any great revolution; yet with the accession of this national line the history of France, properly so called, may be said to have begun."

Encyclopaedia Britannica, 1981, Micropaedia, Vol II, p532 Capet: "Though Robert I's son Hugh the Great restored the Carolingian dynasty in 936, his son Hugh Capet was elected kingin 987, thus removing the Carolingians forever..."
p532 Capetian dynasty: "The ruling house fo France from 987 to 1328, during the feudal period of the Middle Ages. By extending and consolidating their power, the Capetian kings laid the foundation of the French nation-state."
"Hugh Capet, founder of the dynasty, was elected to the kingship in 987, replacing the Carolingian line. His rule was limited to his own domain around Paris, while the rest of the French kingdom was in thehands of powerful local lords. His direct successors, who reigned for over 300 years, gradually increased the territory over which they had control through conquest and inheritance and also by skillfully exploiting their rights as suzerains in areas not under their direct authority..."
"The 15 Capetian kings, inorder of accession, were Hugh Capet, Robert II the Pious, Henry I, Philip I, Louis VI, Louis VII, Philip II Augustus, Louis VIII, Louis IX..."

The New Columbia Encyclopedia, 1975, p1284, Hugh Capet: "Born Abt 938, Died Abt 996, King of France (987-996), first of the Capetians. He was the son of Hugh the Great, to whose vast territories he succeeded in 956. After the death of Louis V, last Carolingian King ofFrance, the nobles and prelates elected him king, setting aside the last Carolingian claimant, Charles I of Lower Lorraine. In order to fix the succession, Hugh took as his associate his son Robert (later King Robert II). He spent much of his reign fighting Charles and later became involved in a controversy with the papacy (unsettled at his death) over deposition of the Carolingian archbishop of Rheims."

The Story of Civilization, Will Durant, Vol IV, The Age of Faith, Bk IV, The Dark Ages, Ch XIX, The Decline of the West, Sec III, France, p475: "When the last Carolingian king Louis V died without issue (987), the nobles and prelates of France sought leadership in some other line than the Carolingian. They found it in thedescendants of a marquess of Neustria significantly named Robert the Strong (died 866)...A grandson, Hugh the Great (Died 956), had acquired by purchase or war almost all the region between Normandy, the Seine, and the Loire as his feudal realm, and had wielded more wealth and power than the kings. Now Hugh's son, called Hugh Capet, had inherited this wealth and power, and apparently the ability that had won them. Archbishop Adalbero, guided by the subtle scholar Gerbert, proposed Hugh Capet as king of France. He was unanimously elected (987), and that Capetian dynasty began which , in direct or collateral line, would rule France until the Revolution."
p479: "The France that Hugh Capet ruled (987-996) now stood out as aseparate nation, no longer acknowledging the suzerainty of the Holy Roman Empire; the unification of western continental Europe achieved by Charlemagne was never restored...But Hugh's France was not our France; Aquitaine and Burgundy were virtually independent duchies, and Lorraine would for seven centuries attach itself to Germany...To improve the chances of an orderly succession, Hugh, in the first year of his reign, had had his son Robert crowned co-king..."

The Wall Chart of World History, Edward Hull, 1988, Studio Editions, France 986: "Hugh Capet, King of France 986-996..."
