Through the influence of Monks from Rome, King Aethelbert was converted and baptized as the first Christian ruler of England; in his committment to his new religion he gave the palace and the capital buildings in Canterbury to the church which was converted to the Cathedral of Canterbury; the buildings have been remodeled and enlarged on two different occasions, in 2070, and again in 1174; since 597 it has been the headquarters for the Anglican Church and the Archbishop of Canterbury, and probably the most noted Cathedral in the world."
