His reign is notable mainly for the emergence of Leon from subordination to the Muslim Caliphate of Cordoba, which weakened rapidly after the death of its energetic dictator, al- Mansur in 1002. In Abt 1017 Alfonso promulgated the Fuero de Leon, the oldest of many local and regional legal codes that were formulated during the Reconquista."
p609, Asturias Kingdom of: "...The medieval kingdom was formed by a number of Visigothic nobles and officials who retired tothe area after the Muslim invasion of Spain. The high mountain ranges to the east, south, and west made the small enclave easy to defend...An imprtant factor in building a sense of national identity was the early 9th-century discovery of thesupposed tomb of St James at Pedron in Galicia. The shrine, later established at Santiago de Compostela, became the spiritual centre of Spain. By the 10th century the king- dom had become too large to be controlled effectively from the mountaincapital at Oviedo, and in 910 Garcia I made Leon, to the south, his capital. Garcia's successors styled themselves kings of Leon and Asturias, and, eventually, simply kings of Leon...The princes of Asturias claimed direct descent from the Visigothic rulers of Spain, whose earliest chroniclers stressed the duty of the kingdom to proceed to the early and total reconquest of the whole Iberian Peninsula..."

The New Columbia Encyclopedia, 1975, p64, Alfonso V: "`The Noble', Born Abt 994, Died 1027. While he was still a minor, the Moorish ruler al-Mansur died, and the Spanish court recovered the city of Leon. Alfonso gave (1020) Leon its `fuero' or charter. He was killed in the siege of Viseu."
