"Daughter of Rudolf II (Died 937), King of Burgundy, and Bertha of Swabia, Adelaide was married (947) toLothair, who succeeded his father, Hugh of Arles, as King of Italy in the same year. After Lothair died (950), Berengar of Ivrea, his old rival seized the Italian throne and imprisoned her (Apr 951) at Garda. After her escape four months later, she asked the German King Otto I the Great to help her regain the throne. Otto marched into Lombardy (Sep 951), declared himself King, and married her (Dec 951). They were crowned Emperor and Empress by Pope John XII in Rome in 962. She devoted her time to promoting Cluniac monasticism and to strengthening the allegiance of the German church to the Emperor.
"After Otto's death (7 May 973), Adelaide exercised influence over her son Otto II until their estrangement in 978, when she left the court and lived in Burgundy with her brother King Conrad. At Conrad's urging she became reconciled with her son, and, before his death in 983, Otto appointed her his gerent in Italy. With her daughter-in-law, Empress Theophano, sheupheld the right of her three-year-old grandson, Otto III, to the German throne. She lived in Lombardy from 985 to 991, when she returned to Germany to serve as sole regent after Theophano's death (991). She governed until Otto III came of age(994), and when he became Emperor in 996, she retired from court life, devoting herself to founding churches, monasteries, and convents. Miracles reportedly occurred at her tomb at Seltz. Her feast day is December 16."

Macropaedia, Vol IX, p1125, Italy and Sicily History of: "...Toward the middle of the 10th century the Kingdom of Italy was torn by the struggles among the great feudal lords. Upon the death of Lothair II, son of Jugh of Provence (950), Berengar II of Ivrea, who, withhis son, Adalbert, already held virtual power, was crowned king. But an opposition, headed by a courageous woman, Adelaide, daughter of Rudolph of Burgundy and widow of Lothair, called for help from Otto I of Germany. Otto, whom Berengar, whenan exile Germany, had already asked to intervene in Italian struggles for power, came to Italy (951), donned the royal crown at Pavia, and married Adelaide..."

Encyclopaedia Britannica, 1981, Micropaedia, Vol VI, p337, Lothair II: "(Lothar) Died 950, Turin Italy, King of Italy in the chaotic post-Carolingian period who ruled as co-king with his father, Hugh of Arles, from 931 until Hugh's exile and death in 947. Lothair remained in Italy when his father, harassed by the powerful Lombard noble Berengar II, Marchese D'Ivrea, fled to Provence. Marrying 16-year-old Adelaide, daughter of Rudolph II of Burgundy (later wife of Emperor Otto I), in the hope of strengthening his position, Lothair found himself playing the fole ofa figurehead, while Berengar exercised the real power in Italy. Lothair died in 950, possibly poisoned by Berengar."
