The Political History of England 1216-1377, Vol III, T F Tout, AMS Press, 1905, p428: "...For his third son, Lionel of Antwerp, when still in his childhood, Edward found the greatest heiress of her time, Elizabeth, theonly daughter of William de Burgh, the sixth lord of Connaught and third Earl of Ulster, the representative of one of the chief Anglo-Norman houses in Ireland. Even before his marriage, Lionel was made Earl of Ulster, a title sunk after 1362 inthe novel dignity of the duchy of Clarence. This title was chosen because Elizabeth de Burgh was a granddaughter of Elizabeth of Clare, the sister of the last Clare Earl of Gloucester, and a share of the Gloucester inheritance passed through her to the young duke..."
Encyclopaedia Britannica, Micropaedia, 1981, Vol X, p246, Ulster Earls of: "An Irish title first created in 1205 for Hugh de Lacy (Died Abt 1242). He left no male heir, and the earldom was in 1263 granted to Walter deBurgh. The 3rd earl, William (Died 1333), left only an heiress, whose husband Lionel, son of King Edward III, was recognized as earl of Ulster in her right. Their descendant Edward, duke of York, ascended the English throne as King Edward IV in1461; since that time the earldom has been held by members of the royal family only."
