p232, Alfonso VII: "Born Abt 1004, Died Aug 1157, Fresnada, Spain, King of Leon and Castile from 1126, and the last of the Christian emperors of medieval Spain. Alfonso won some victories over the Muslims in the early part of his reign, but after 1146 allied himself with the Muslim Almoravids in an attempt to check the invading Almohads from North Africa. He was unable to prevent the establishment of Portugal as an independent kingdom (1139), and his division of his realm between his two sons, Sancho III of Castile, and Ferdinand II of Leon, put an end to the concept of empire in medieval Spain."
