Alfonso was the son of Petronila, Queen of Aragon, and her consort, Ramon Berenguer IV, who had inherited the countships of Barcelona, Besalu, and Cerdana from his father and that of Provence from his mother. Alfonso fell heir in 1172 tothe countship of Roussillon, becoming the ruler of a tenuous federation that formed the base of a powerfull Mediterranean empire in the later Middle Ages. He also undertook the reconquest of Valencia and made an agreement (the Cazorla Pact, 1179) with Alfonso VIII of Castile, dividing territory to be reconquered from the Moors into Aragonese and Castilian zones. Alfonso divided his kingdom in his will, alienating Provence from the crown of Aragon."
