Encyclopaedia Britannica, 1981, Micropaedia, Vol I, p536, Arnulf: "Born Abt 580, Died 18 Jul 641, Bishop of Metz, considered with Pepin I of Landen a founder of the Carolingian dynasty. Arnulf, a Frankish noble was associated with the courts of Theudebert II King of Austrasia and Chlotar II King of Neustria. He was named Bishop of Metz in 611/612, and ruled Austrasia with Pepin, the Mayor of the Palace, for Dagobert I from 622 until he retired to the eremitic life (Abt 627). Arnulf's son married Pepin's daughter; their son, Pepin II of Herstal, was Charlemagne's great grandfather."

Vol II, p581, Carolingians: "...another of Chlotar's counsellors was a certain Arnulf (died Abt ?635), Bishop of Metz. Pepin had a son, Grimoald, and a daughter, Begga, who was married to Arnulf's son Ansegisel..."
