BOOK Macropaedia, Vol VII, p613, France History of: "...Northernmost of the principal territories of France outside of the royal domain (centered around Paris) was Flanders, where the Carolingian King Charles the Bald installed his brother-in- law, Baldwin Iron Arm, as Count in 862. Under Baldwin's successors, Baldwin II (879-918), Arnulf (918-963), Arnulf II (965-988), Baldwin IV (988-1035), Baldwin V (1036-1067), and Baldwin VI (1067-1070), the county, which included part of what is now Belgium, was gradually extended eastward. By 1070 it was a powerful state with centralized institutions. Under Count Robert le Frison (1071-1093), towns began to develop, and the woollen industry- the basis of Falnders' economy for the remainder of the mediebal period- first became important. The direct line of Baldwin I became extinct in 1119..."
