BOOKS
Enclyclopaedia Britannica Micropaedia Vol X p814 "Yeoman, in English history, a class between the gentry and the labourers; a yeoman was usually a landholder but could also be a retainer, guard, attendant, or subordinate official. The word appears in Middle English as yemen or yoman, and is perhaps a contraction of yeng man or yong man, meaning young man, or attendant. Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales (late 14th century) depict a yeoman who is a forester and a retainer. Most yeomen of the later Middle Ages were probably occupied in cultivating the land; Raphael Holinshed, in his Chronicles (1577), described them as having free land worth L6 (originally 40 shillings) annually and as not entitled to bear arms."

Genealogy of the Bliss Family in America, Vol I, Aaron Tyler Bliss, Midland, Michigan, 1982, p27: "Yeoman. Will dated 24 Jan 1638/39, proved 28 Sep 1639. "Item. I giue to Margaret Blisse my daughter to be payde to her by my sonne Henry the sume of five punds upon the fourth day of Mrch next ensuing the date heereof..."
