MEMORIES Grandma- Her smile, Christmas in her warm cozy home on Eichelberger with the smell of dinner cooking; lots of uncles, aunts, and cousins, those bubbly ornaments on the cedar Christmas tree, the Squirrel (See Brian Lee ANDREW), the picture of Great Grandpa Angermueller (See George Hermann ANGERMUELLER); Tootie, Sherian, Adair and I doing things together- competing for a plastic horse treasure & them letting me win; her sending me a lovely note for my high school graduation, "Everything happens for the best", undying optimism.
Grandpa- I remember visiting him rarely, but not enough to have any lasting memories of my own, only stories from Dad...I particularly enjoyed the one of the kids putting a sock in his saxophone...the instrument I learned to play in high school.
Early childhood- Going out for bread and hiding behind the telephone pole outside the corner store on Oak Hill St because the mailman was there until Auntie found me, playing across Juniata St from the school with my friend, going into Mrs Pickering's kindergarten class with Adair after recess until Auntie found me, getting hit in the head with rocks and toy trains, getting a spanking for dropping trou in the street on a dare, the Gilberts, Johnny German, visits to Aunties house.
Parents- Ma- Beautiful, loving, sad eyes, I remember being jealous of Jeff at Connecticut St, got us many books and read to us, taught us to appreciate music, piano lessons, the stress of raising a large family like us, occasional tirades directed against physical objects or someone other than me, apparent physical frailty, the mystery of her parents, and the joy learning about her eleven cousins and annual reunions, the Round Robin lives on...
Pa- Challenging but always encouraging us to do our best, protective of family, fear of the belt, Cubmaster, Scoutmaster, one-time county alderman candidate, helped mould our political philosophy, precise just like an Engineer, just wished he'd quit changing jobs and moving every time we were getting settled in.
Siblings- Adair- I was lucky to have a brother only two years ahead of me to try things out first, I always looked up to him, he just took it in stride, riding bikes to Grand Ave and later to Missouri Bottoms, the C&O Canal, staying late with me doing genealogy research in St Louis, Marine Corps Marathon- kept me going when I hit the wall at Ohio Ave 27 Oct 1996.
Jeff- Our little brother waited long enough to arrive, I remember my encouraging his revolt against the system in high school, his suffering the consequences, his visit to me at Columbia, getting arrested (1st speeding ticket) driving Nuyen Ba Chung in from Airport in 1966, admirer of Jeff's outdoor skills and world travels, hiking with him on AT, and up Mt St Helens.
Kathie- "If it's a boy we'll name him Galen Michael," our first little sister, shaking up the mix of 3 boys, our first family vacation in the '54 Ford to Philmont in NM, absorbing Jeff's teasing, then helping out so much with her 4 little sisters, stable, nurturing, photographing her wedding & developing film at Duke.
Julie- Born while we were in the city just prior to family move to the suburbs, Girlie-girl, visits to the farm, swimming in that cow cesspool, searching for fossils at Fossil Creek.
Val- Smartest of us all, went off to some convent for early education, independent, brave, and honest, sibling look-alike.
Mimi- Dark, mysterious, beautiful, complex, the best photographer and writer of the Clan, helped me figure things out in Sep 1984 when my world was falling apart, enjoyed her humorous contributions to the Round Robin over the years.
Lisa- Homecoming dance 24 Oct 1963, got to know her only through visits home from college and med school, 7yo when I married. Family Traditions- Sodie night, first (& only) meal out Pagliachi's Pizza on Kings Highway in 1955, Christmas at Grandma's, malts at United Dairy Farmers for good grades, vacation trips in the '54 Ford wagon & Chevy van.
Horace Mann School- the end of year parade, Drum and Bugle Corp, going to the Highlands, the big fence, sexually segregated playgrounds and hall monitors, Susan Carol & Mollie Belz, kissing under the porch, spending the night and picking up her father at the train station, Cub Scouts, my 3.5 grade class with sun coming in the windows and wondering at the word "determined", interrupted by move to Berkeley.
Frostwood- the Pepperidge Tree, the redwood fence, Prince, Farmer Nick, trying to get a rabbit in a stick and cardboard box trap, getting a B-B gun for Christmas, having male teachers in grade 5-6, learning to invert fractions, Jimmy Anderson's bad habit, Susan Lauder, not being allow to play baseball because I might get hit in the head, hating Jr High, seeing the bulldozers destroy Farmer Nick's.
Greenhills- "Please?", model community, Boy Scouts, Dan Silva, Eagle, God & Country, Trail Hikes, summer camp, getting a malt for good grades, the Community swimming pool, Band, Marti the majorette, Fall football games at night, Denison University and dragonflies, Mary Lou McFadden, the new high school, Mr Scuro, the Walters, NHS, Ted Lindner & Craig Berger, the Constellations, JFK during It's Academic.
Columbia- New York City!, impossibly difficult for my average abilities, struggling just to get passing grades, Cit Council & SEER, Humanities & Contemporary Civilization, study room in Furnald Hall, determinism & Mr Cook, Band- playing world premier Aaron Copeland piece in Carnegie Hall in front of the composer, studying music & philosophy during campus disruptions.
Duke- my first patient with CHF, Stan Appel, the Russian patient who lost 8 siblings in the Holocaust; the mind & brain, Neurochemistry Convention in Washington during wartime, Watergate hearings in the laboratory, my first car- convertible VW, Lou, the Eno River, Intern.
Johns Hopkins- residency, fatherhood, the pressure of research, and the traumatic ending of my 1st marriage...
